Keep Your AC Filter Clean

air-filterFor the most part, air conditioning maintenance in Colton, CA, is not a job that you can handle on your own. The process is much more complex than many homeowners seem to realize. During maintenance, electrical components and connections are tested, moving parts are inspected and lubricated as needed, and much more. However, there is one maintenance task that you can and should handle on your own, and it is a vitally important one—though too frequently overlooked.

We are talking about changing your air filter. Sorry if that is not as exciting a prospect as you were thinking, but everything we said above is true. A dirty air filter in your air conditioning system will have much more serious consequences for your home cooling system than you may realize. If you’re serious about getting the most from your AC, then you need a fresh filter in place.  It’s a simple and affordable way to optimize cooling performance.

What Does the Air Filter Do?

One reason why so many homeowners fail to change their air filter as needed—typically every 1-3 months, though a lot of factors can influence that timeline—is because they don’t notice any real decline in their overall indoor air quality. If that is the warning sign that you’re waiting for, though, it’s going to be a long wait. This air filter really is not there to protect the quality of the air throughout your home. Instead, it is there to protect your air conditioner itself.

When dust and dirt are allowed to build up on sensitive components within your HVAC systems, they will suffer a number of different consequences. An air filter that is too dirty really isn’t much better than no air filter at all, though. In fact, it can make things worse!

Consequences of Very Dirty Air Filters

The main problem with a very dirty air filter is that it is going to seriously restrict airflow throughout the HVAC system. That means that the system is going to have to work harder than it should have to in order to cool your home. And that means that you’re going to spend more money than you should have to in order to cool your home effectively.

Unfortunately, regardless of how much you are paying for your comfort, that comfort may be subpar. When your system has a dirty air filter in place, its efficiency isn’t the only thing that suffers. Its output will as well.

The system may overheat and short cycle, meaning that it shuts down prematurely in order to protect itself from damages. Its coil can ice over as well, as restricted airflow will result in the coil getting much too cold and condensation collected on that coil can freeze. When that happens, the insulating barrier formed by the ice is only going to exacerbate the problems further. Be sure to treat your AC right by keeping a fresh air filter in place!
