Fall has arrived in Riverside, CA and as usual it doesn’t look a whole lot different than summer, with high temperatures the norm. Things have finally begun to cool down this week, however, and soon enough we’ll be trading in our air conditioners for furnaces and heating systems. Now is the time to prepare yours for another winter’s work, when you can address potential issues at leisure and you won’t need your system the way you might in just a few short weeks. Here’s a few tips to help you get your heater ready for another winter.
Schedule a Maintenance Session
A trained technician should come to your home before the start of every heating season and perform routine maintenance on your system. He or she will clean the dust off of unused components, unclog the burners, change the filters and test the system for leaks and similar inefficiencies. If more specific repairs are needed, he or she can identify the problem and schedule a session to correct it at your leisure. Again, by doing this now, it gives you the time to address any larger problems before you have any real need of your heating system, and once the maintenance session is done, your system will perform with greater efficiency: lowering your monthly heating bills in the process.
Your existing heating system may be working just fine, but that doesn’t mean it won’t benefit from a few improvements or upgrades before the winter season starts. If you have an older thermostat, for instance – particularly one that still uses mercury – you may wish to exchange it for a modern one, with smart features such as the ability to turn your system on and off remotely with an app. Or if you have a large home and want to save money on heating and air conditioning bills, install a zone system that lets you adjust the temperature in each room individually.
