Skills Required by Heating Technicians

The easiest way to tell the difference between an amateur and a professional heating technician is licensing. A professional heating technician must be licensed and insured. However, this alone doesn’t guarantee quality service. A heating technician worth hiring will have a range of skills that mark him or her as a true professional.

We’ll go over the required skills a heating technician needs to do the job you require when you call for repairs, installation, or maintenance. At Avis Plumbing, Heating and Air, we are proud of the talent of all our Corona, CA heating technicians, and believe you’ll find complete satisfaction with their work.

Heating technicians—The requisite skills

  • Mechanical systems knowledge: The most basic skill that heating technicians must have is an excellent handling of the many mechanical systems that make up heaters. They must do jobs such as change motors, replace fan belts, clean gas burners, and repair ductwork.
  • Electrical skills: Although heating technicians are not (necessarily) also electricians by trade, the electronics involved in many modern heaters require that they have extensive knowledge in this field. A heating technician should know how to wire equipment and check for electrical damage. It is especially important for a technician to know the electrical workings of thermostats, which affect all heating systems.
  • Analytical diagnostic skills: If repairing, installing, and maintaining heating systems always went by the book, then anyone with “the book” could follow the instructions and do it as well. But almost nothing goes that smoothly, and a heating technician must know how to analyze the many variables that appear in any repair or installation job and learn to quickly adapt and find the best solution to any problems. Although some of this can be taught, the best way for technicians to develop this skill is through years of hands-on work experience.
  • Good communication with customers: A heating technician needs to communicate and work well with customers so that the customer knows what the technician is doing, how much the work will cost, and what other options are available. Technicians can explain in basic terms the operation of heaters so customers understand what work needs to be done and so the customer will know that the technician is qualified and dependable.
