Summer Is Coming: Here’s How to Prepare Your Air Conditioner

Southern California has a lengthy hot season, which means summer weather arrives for us long before June. The outdoor thermometer can start making precipitous climbs during the spring. A home’s air conditioning system needs to be prepared to take on the heat. How certain are you that your home’s AC is ready for the hot weather?

We have some advice on what you can do to see that you have an air conditioning system that will be able to keep your household steadily cooled all the way through summer and into those early hot months of fall. For the professional service you need to prepare your air conditioning in Ontario, CA, give the experts at Avis Plumbing, Heating and Air a call today. We have more than six decades of experience keeping the homes in the Inland Empire cool and comfortable.

Here are ways to see that your air conditioner is ready for summer:

  • Change the air filter: An air conditioner has a filter to trap contaminating particles that might enter its cabinet and dirty the components, leading to inefficient performance and even repair needs. This filter will become clogged over time, and during the summer it usually needs to be changed (or cleaned if it’s a permanent filter) once a month. You want to make sure that the AC begins the summer with a clean filter, so have it changed/cleaned during the spring.
  • Take the AC for a “test run”: If you haven’t needed to turn your air conditioner on for a few weeks, turn it on now and let it run for about an hour. Look for any signs of trouble. These include strange noises, low airflow from the vents, warms spots in the house, a non-responsive thermostat, etc. It’s a wise idea to have any necessary repair work done now, rather than wait for when you really need the air conditioner to cool down your house.
  • Schedule routine maintenance: This is the most important step in preparing an AC. You must arrange every year for a spring maintenance visit from an HVAC professional. During this visit, the technician will thoroughly inspect the air conditioning system, looking over the coils, the electrical connections, the motors, the condensate drain, etc., and then make adjustments and tune-ups to see that the AC will work at its best. The technician will also catch any places where the cooling system needs repair work and help you schedule fixes. Maintenance will not only see that your air conditioner is in peak shape, it will give you the peace of mind that there is very little chance it will experience a breakdown during the summer heat.
