Beware of Clogs in Your Kitchen Plumbing

Monday, May 28th, 2018

clogged-kitchen-sinkToo often, we tend to use our kitchen sink like it’s a trash can. Without even thinking about it, we put pasta, rice, table scraps, coffee grounds, you-name-it right down that kitchen drain and never give it a second thought – right up until the time that it starts to back up and drain slowly.

Nobody likes a clogged kitchen sink, and the next thing you know, you find yourself having to make an appointment to get that clogged sink taken care of. Here are some things you should know to prevent that from happening.

Call in a Drain Cleaning Service Instead of Using Store-Bought Solutions

Monday, February 5th, 2018

plumbing-clogsClogs in your drain are a common occurrence and sooner or later every homeowner needs to deal with them. The usual reaction is to purchase a solution at the store, such as a chemical cleanser or perhaps a plumbing snake at the local home improvement center.

In most instances, however, that can be a big mistake. Store-bought solutions can’t compete with the more thorough and comprehensive drain-cleaning services that a professional can provide, and if you can’t clear a drain with a plunger and some elbow grease, your best bet is to contact a plumbing service right away.

Don’t Rely on Store-Bought Solutions for Clogged Drains

Monday, September 18th, 2017

clogged-drain-repairClogged drains are a common problem in any household, and sooner or later you’re going to need to deal with a clogged tub or a stopped-up sink. The standard tactic for most households is to simply purchase a solution at the store: a cleanser, for instance, or perhaps a mechanical snake. Both are available at any supermarket or home improvement center, and both will usually resolve the problem, at least in the short term. That last part can be problematic, however, and a big part of why store-bought solutions for clogs really aren’t solutions at all.

Call in a Plumber When You Have a Clogged Drain

Monday, August 21st, 2017

plumbing-clogsClogged drains rank among the most common plumbing problems we encounter in the area: when food or other materials build up in the pipes and cause the water to back up. Homeowners tend to turn to do-it-yourself solutions, and in the most mild cases — those which can resolve with a plunger and a little elbow grease — that’s usually the best option.

If you’re looking to purchase a solution in the store however, you’d likely be better off calling in a professional plumber instead. There are a number of important reasons why, but it boils down to two: value for your money and insurance that the problem is taken care of.

Be Careful What You Throw Down the Drain

Monday, December 12th, 2016

The holidays are here, and chances are you’re going to have family and friends over for dinner, or perhaps a few football games on New Year’s Day. That usually involves a lot of cooking and preparation in the kitchen, and whether it’s a turkey dinner or just some munchies for football, you need to be careful about what you throw down the drain. We get a lot of calls to fix clogged drains in the Ontario, CA area during this time of year, but we’d much rather help you stop them in the first place than correct them after the face. A good place to start is to watch the foods you throw down the drain. Here’s a quick list of what to watch out for:

  • Fats, oils and grease, known collectively as FOG in the industry. These often get poured down the drain in heated liquid form, then solidify in the drain to create a sticky mess. The best solution is to pour the hot liquid into an empty can, then wait until it cools and throw it in the trash.
  • Fibrous vegetables, including potatoes, celery, carrots and the like. They can wrap around the gears of your garbage disposal. If you peel vegetables in the sink, always over the drain and make sure the peelings are cleaned up before your open it.
  • Coffee grounds, which can grind in the gears of the garbage disposal and create a significant problem. Toss them out instead of dumping them in the sink.
  • Bones and seeds, which most people know about, should never be tossed down the drain. The garbage disposal won’t be able to grind them up, and they will eventually break it.
  • Rice and pasta, which can be surprisingly strong, especially when they get tangled up. They can also expand when wet, creating a clogged mess.

Call Avis Plumbing, Heating and Air to unclog your drains this holiday.
