The Importance of Maintenance for Your Heating System

With all the wet weather we’ve had in Claremont, CA lately, our home furnaces have been put to quite a test. The rain and cool weather are good news for California’s drought, but that still puts the onerous on the homeowner to make sure their furnaces are kept running. A quality maintenance session is a great way to do that, not only as a way of preventing breakdowns, but of reducing monthly costs for your heating system.

Maintenance isn’t the same as repairs, which are meant to deal with a specific, acute problem. Instead, they treat the countless little issues that don’t merit a repair call on their own: things like loose bolts, dirty filter and clogs built up on the burners. It also lets the technician take a thorough look at the system and spot any issues that might become a more serious problem further down the line.

Ideally, maintenance sessions should take place at the beginning of heating season, usually between Labor Day and Halloween. But any time is a good time for one, especially if your furnace hasn’t received a maintenance session in the past 12 months,

The benefits of doing so are twofold:

  • Lower monthly costs. We don’t pay a huge amount for heating here in So Cal, but that doesn’t mean that you should pay more than you have to for the privilege. Maintenance helps lower the monthly cost of heating, and when applied regularly over time, can lower the impact of wear and tear on the system.
  • Early repairs. Catching possible repair issues early is always a good thing, not only because it helps limit the damage (leading to a less expensive repair job in most cases), but because it lets you schedule repairs according to your timetable instead of having to scramble during an emergency.
