Family Friendly Spring Activities

Not everyone lives in an area where winters are particularly harsh. Even so, just about everyone can relate to the feeling of excitement and hope that spring brings with it. Spring is a great time of the year, and it offers plenty of opportunities for family friendly activities. These are great ways to spend quality time with your family, and they can also be good opportunities to instill the virtues of hands–on work and to reinforce an appreciation of learning for learning’s sake.

One of the most versatile ways in which to enjoy a day of family–oriented fun is to take a hike together. You don’t need to find the tallest mountain around to have a great time. Keeping everyone’s abilities in mind, find an appropriate day hike. Pack a backpack or two, ensure that you have some snacks, plenty of water and food for a sit–down lunch (nothing too fancy, cold sandwiches will do). The feeling of accomplishment that you and your family will enjoy by scaling your structure, whether a mountain or a hill, will be a great shared experience.

To spice things up a little, especially when kids are in tow, bring a plant and wildlife identification book. Make a game of identifying different trees, and look for signs of wildlife in the area. Even if you don’t see anything directly, spotting tracks, nests and wildlife dwelling spaces is both educational and fun. This is a great way to take a breather and catch your breath as well.

You don’t even have to leave your home to get out and enjoy the spring weather. Why not start a small garden with your family to teach about where food comes from? You don’t have to feed the neighborhood in doing so. A couple of tomato plants are more than enough to show the family how a little bit of work and care can pay off come harvest time. Once you’ve had your educational fix, of course, it is just as beneficial to spend some time having fun playing wiffle ball and cooking dinner over an open flame.

Another way to get the family spending time together is to decide on a project to work as a team on. What kid wouldn’t love a treehouse in the backyard, for example? Are you short on trees? Why not build a fort or erect a swing set instead? Get the kids involved, show them how to swing a hammer, and watch them reap the benefits of helping to construct their new play structure.

When it comes to enjoying springtime fun with the entire family, the sky really is the limit. See what other ideas you can come up with to get the blood pumping and to learn new things. Remember to enjoy it while it lasts, as the chill of winter is never more than a few seasons away.

How a Carbon Monoxide Detector Can Save Lives

There are a number of issues that can put your health at risk in your own home. That is why we invest in fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, circuit breakers and other safety devices. One of the most important of these devices is the carbon monoxide detector. If you do not have one in your home, you are taking a very serious, and very unnecessary, gamble with your safety. This is due to the fact that without a carbon monoxide detector, there is really no way for you to discover the presence of this deadly gas in your home until it has some effect on you. Read on to learn more about the importance of  installing a quality carbon monoxide detector in your house.
What is Carbon Monoxide?
Carbon monoxide is a byproduct of burning fossil fuels, including wood and natural gas. It is poisonous to breathe in, and if exposure is heavy and prolonged enough it can lead to death. This is especially problematic due to the fact that carbon monoxide is completely colorless, odorless and tasteless. While you may smell or see smoke in your home, carbon monoxide simply will not make itself known until it starts to take effect on your body. This is why you really need to be able to count on the carbon monoxide detector in your house. Early warning of CO exposure is your best bet to escape the situation unscathed.
Symptoms of Carbon Monoxide Exposure
Hopefully you will never encounter firsthand the effects that carbon monoxide can have on a person. However, it is a good idea to familiarize yourself with these effects. The benefit of a great carbon monoxide detector is that you will likely never suffer these symptoms, but one can truly never be too careful when it comes to carbon monoxide exposure. Plus, you may feel its effects out of your home, such as on the job or even in a car if the exhaust is not properly diverted.
One of the first symptoms of exposure to carbon monoxide is a tightness in your chest. You may also feel a headache coming on, sudden fatigue, or dizziness. Nausea is also common. Prolonged exposure will lead to more severe symptoms. High exposure levels can induce vomiting and even lead to unconsciousness. Eventually, given enough time, carbon monoxide can lead to death as it deprives your vital organs of oxygen. If you have any reason at all to suspect exposure to carbon monoxide, regardless of whether or not a detector sounds the alarm, clear the area and call emergency services immediately.
Have a Professional Install Your Carbon Monoxide Detector
It is important that you purchase a high quality carbon monoxide detector. It is equally important, though, that you have your device installed by a qualified professional. This is the only way that you can know with certainty that your carbon monoxide detector will be there for you when you need it most. Contact us today if you have any concerns or questions regarding the immediate need for a carbon monoxide detector installation in your home.
